Benefits of Omega 3's in Pet Treats
We all understand the benefits of Omega 3’s in the human diet.
They are essential for the control of:
- Heart Disease
- Great for joints as it reduces inflammation.
- Great for the skin and hair
- Helps stimulate the immune system.
Guess what? They do the same for our pets as they do for us as illustrated by Dr. Signe Svinland, director of pet care for Aker Biomarine in a lecture she gave recently.
So what are they?
Simply, Omega 3 oils are a type of polyunsaturated fat. They are classed as an essential fatty acid which is one that must be supplied in the diet because it cannot be manufactured by the body.
Sources of Omega 3's include Marine Source (eg Ocean Fish, Krill); Plant Sourced (eg Walnuts, Flaxseed); Animal Sourced (eg. Eggs, Crocodile)
As such, it makes you think that if we should increase our intake, then so should our pets.
You can do this through diet and as such you have many choices on how to get this.
Manufacturers of functional dog treats is one such option. Huds and Toke, for example, use Australian farmed Crocodile in some of their treats to increase the percentage of Omega 3 oils.
Crocodile is naturally high in Omega 3’s. As is fish such as Ocean Fish, which is another ingredient Huds and Toke uses in some of their products.
Remember, there are many ways to increase your pets intake of Omega 3’s and functional pet treats, such as the ones made by Huds and Toke, are worth considering.
Have a great week.
