ADOPT A PET - IT CAN BE A GREAT OPTION!!!
Adopting a Pet can be a great option!!!
Here at Huds and Toke, we couldn’t imagine life without our furry family members. We Believe, the more the merrier, but before you take the leap and add to your family, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration before you welcome a new friend. ESPECIALLY when considering a new puppy dog!!!
- How often are you home?
- Which breed is best suited to your lifestyle?
- Should you adopt an energetic puppy, or is an older dog more your speed?
- Should you buy, or should you adopt?
All of the team at Huds and Toke, are firm believers in the “adopt ” philosophy.
Whilst adopting a puppy dog is not for everyone, it does have a number of positive options worth considering before going elsewhere.
- Adopting from your local shelter saves not just one life but two; you get to provide a happy life for your new furry family member while also freeing up a spot at the shelter for another animal in need of rescue.
- There can be a significant cost difference.
- A wide range of choices all in the same place.
- These include breed choice
- age choice
- size choice etc....
Not to mention, you’re also supporting your local community.
There are, however, a few extra things you need to take into consideration when looking at shelter dogs.
For all the benefits in adopting, there are also a few things to be aware of and to deeply consider.....
These include:
- Unfortunately, most of the dogs at a shelter have had a challenged life......so are looking for a fresh start.
- The dogs come to the shelter with no known history, as such, they can often take time to settle into their new surroundings.
- Remember, many of these dogs come from the streets, transitioning first to a pound, then a refuge, and finally to a forever home. This process can be very overwhelming for the dogs, and they can often be quite shy and timid to start with. It’s important to give your new fur baby time to come out of their shell and to remain patient until they trust they won’t be uprooted from their new home.
- It will also take time for
your new dog to learn that you are their new owner. In the early stages of
adoption, it is vital you ensure your dog knows that they can look to you for
trust and guidance. Be sure to place yourself in the position of “Top Dog” in
the household and be fair but firm. Trust may be slow to come, but it is infinitely
rewarding and fulfilling when you finally earn it. A great way to build trust
is using training treats or pet treats to reward your new family member.
- If you have children, ensure
they are not too boisterous around your new pet—at least in the initial stages.
It’s important to teach your children that shelter dogs need time to adjust to
their new surroundings and let their guard down before they are happy to play
and rough and tumble. We also recommend supervising your children with your new
shelter dog at first, as they may not be able to recognize when the dog wants
to be left alone. Give your dog some time to ease in and soon enough their
personality will shine.
Opening your home to a shelter dog may be one of the best decisions you ever make. These dogs have so much love to give, and are often overlooked.
It takes an incredible act of compassion to take a homeless, lonely animal and give them a happy home.
You may not be saving the world, but to the dog you are saving, you become their whole world..... and that, is an amazing feeling.
